It takes someone older and wiser to get through a midlife funk.
Why?
Because a midlife funk only happens to someone is actually older and wiser.
Hard to believe that it’s even happening to you, right? You probably can’t believe you’re as old as you are.
I can’t, that’s for sure.
I even forget my age sometimes.
To make matters even worse…you don’t even have to be in midlife to be in a funk.
That’s what I mean about being “older and wiser.”
You gotta have some experience under your belt to get funky. I think a “midlife funk” is really more about “stage” than it is about “age.”
Especially when it comes to job-related funk.
That’s why I was interviewed on Dr. Katrina Ubell’s podcast recently, Weight Loss for the Busy Physicians.
As far as I can tell, it doesn’t matter what your career is to have a funk. After some time in the trenches, you can still have what I like to call, a bout of “career malaise.”
It happens to the best of us.
No career is immune.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Paralegals.
Human Resources.
Book publishers.
Psychologists.
Project managers.
Art managers.
College guidance counselors.
Editors.
Medical coders.
Accountants.
Insurance specialists.
Gallery owners.
Marketing professionals.
Business owners.
Just to name a few. All careers my clients have talked to me about because they were all funked up.
Is there anything wrong with these careers? Does your job really suck?
Usually not.
Well….sometimes….but like I said, usually not.
Something’s wrong though.
In fact, the job usually looks PERFECT on paper.
But…
YOU feel like something’s missing.
YOU feel like you’re bored.
YOU feel like you’re stagnant.
So, here’s my big question for you: What’s your brain telling you these days?
Sometimes you really have to listen.
As if you were Horton in Whoville.
We are experts at ignoring.
Too busy to take the time.
Especially when it might be a bit uncomfortable.
Like when you don’t know what to do.
You might know something’s off.
But you don’t know what to do.
You might feel super stuck.
But you don’t know how to unstick yourself.
Here’s a good one…something that I really want you to think about.
What if there’s nothing wrong at all?
What if this feeling is simply your brain telling you that it’s time for self care?
Time to give yourself a break?
Time to re-group?
Time to re-focus?
How would you feel if you thought that?
Would you be more compassionate towards yourself?
Would you feel relief?
What if you decided to think that “you’re learning to figure out what you want.”
Can you feel the difference when you change the thought slightly?
That’s the power of managing your mind with compassion.
That’s the power of your thinking.
That’s the power of YOU.
