Welcome to another episode of the Women in the Middle Podcast

Are you interested in making music matter more in midlife? My guest is Adriana Barton, a mid-career journalist, a former staff reporter at Canada’s National Newspaper, the Globe and Mail, and the author of a new book (coming in October 2022): Wired for Music: A Search for Health and Joy Through the Science of Sound.

Adriana also has a serious and intense music background. She was a very young child when she began studying the cello, which she did for 17 years until injury put an end to her classical music career.

As a journalist, her writing on health, science, visual arts, architecture, music, and pop culture has appeared in publications including Western Living, Vancouver magazine, BlackFlash, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and more.

Adriana is wrapping up the book I mentioned, Wired for Music.  Drawing from neuroscience, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, her book argues that music is much more than entertainment or a rarefied art form: It’s an age-old system to boost human health, connect us to each other (even at a chemical level), and add meaning, resilience, and joy.

Her research for the book and journalism assignments have taken her to Syria, Jordan, India, Zimbabwe, and Brazil. She lives in Vancouver, Canada, with her husband and son.

You know, One of the reasons I really love this interview with Adriana is because her book is also about how she has reconsidered her own relationship with music and how her midlife journey brought her back to using music as a way to nourish her soul.  You’re going to love this interview!

Please ENJOY.
