Here’s what you’ll discover about Forks in the Road: When Fear Has Been Making Your Decisions:- Why Suzy revisited one of her most personal stories and what she finally saw in it that she’d never connected before, even after years of teaching this material
- How losing both parents unexpectedly at a young age and a frightening violation of safety in high school quietly shaped decades of decision-making, and why seeing that connection for the first time felt like relief
- Why fear in midlife rarely feels like fear, and why it almost always feels responsible, sensible, and realistic instead
- The specific ways fear can show up for women in their late 50s and 60s: the trip not taken, the opportunity declined, the class never signed up for and why none of them feel like fear at the time
- The upgraded Forks in the Road exercise (four steps to go back through your life, find the pattern, and see fear that felt like a solid reason)
- The single most important question to ask at every fork in the road: does the fear still make sense today?
- A powerful coaching question that temporarily removes fear from the equation entirely and what’s left when it does
- Six concrete questions to interrupt the fear pattern at your next fork in the road, before it makes the decision for you
- Why your inner “mean girl” has no place in this exercise and how compassion for your past self is what makes this work so powerful for you
- Why the decisions ahead, like retirement, identity, empty nest, relationships, time, etc., deserve to be made by you and not by a fear formed decades ago
Welcome to another episode of the Women in the Middle® Podcast!
Most of us know what a fork in the road feels like. You’ve got a heavy decision to make. There are at least two possible paths. And when you’re at the fork, you know it’s time to choose which way to go and that you will have to live with your choice.
What can be so surprising is how often fear has been driving the decision-making over the years. Not us. Fear. Dressed up as reason, responsibility, and common sense.
In this episode, Suzy revisits the Forks in the Road concept from Episode 335 but takes it somewhere much deeper. She shares a personal realization she had recently about her own 1982 fork in the road, when she was accepted into a university program in the Caribbean and turned it down. She’d told that story before. But this time, she finally connected it to experiences from earlier in her life that explained, clearly and with compassion, why that fear made complete sense at the time…and as an older and wiser woman over 40 years later, why it may no longer apply to the woman she is now.
From there, Suzy walks through what fear at the forks can look like for women in their late 50s and 60s. You might be familiar with this experience…it’s when you have responsible-sounding reasons that are actually self-protection in disguise.
You’ll also hear about the upgraded Forks in the Road exercise with the fear lens applied. The result is a four-step process that goes beyond insight into decision-making patterns and into something more meaningful: genuine compassion for why you made the choices you did, and a clearer path to making the next ones from desire rather than protection.
This is one of the most personal episodes Suzy has recorded. And one of the most useful.
