Becoming the Queen of Your Brain Domain in Midlife

Are you the Queen of your Brain Domain?

For women over 50 who want to stop living on autopilot, the idea of being intentional about your life sounds good in theory. But there’s a gap between understanding that and actually doing it and that gap is worth talking about honestly.

Five years ago I introduced a concept on my podcast that has been part of the show ever since: being the Queen of Your Brain Domain. The foundation of it was this…you are not your thoughts, you can learn to watch your thoughts, and you can take responsibility for your feelings and your results. That work is real and it still matters.

But I’ve come to see that it’s not the whole picture.

You can do all of that work (the awareness, the thought management, the responsibility) and still be coasting through your life. Still letting time accumulate in ways you didn’t actually choose. That’s the part I didn’t have language for five years ago. Now I do.

The upgrade: what being the Queen really means now

Being the Queen of Your Brain Domain is no longer just about managing your thoughts. It’s about leading your life moment by moment, while you’re actually in it.

I think about this in three parts.

Notice. Not just noticing your thoughts, but noticing your life. Your patterns. Where your time is going. What you’ve been rushing through without really seeing.

Here’s a personal example. A little while ago I realized that three years had gone by since I’d last visited a close senior relative. Three years. When that landed I was genuinely shocked that much time had flown by. Life had kept moving and I had kept moving with it, and somehow three years had just accumulated without my really choosing that.

That’s coasting. It doesn’t look dramatic from the outside. It rarely does.

Interrupt. Once you notice, you step in. You create a little space between your habit and your next choice. You question what’s been running on automatic.

Amplify. And this is the real upgrade. It’s the part that has deepened most for me. Amplify doesn’t mean fixing what’s wrong. It means expanding what’s right. When you notice something meaningful, instead of moving past it, you stay with it. You let it matter. You let yourself actually be in it.

Radical Amazement

I’ve been using the phrase “Radical Amazement” to describe this, and I want to be clear that I didn’t come up with it. It comes from Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, a theologian and philosopher whose writing I find genuinely moving. He said: “Get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.”

That’s it exactly.

The snake. This spring I was setting up my garden and almost stepped on a small snake. By the time I grabbed my phone he had completely disappeared into the grass. Gone. A few days later I filled up my bird bath and the very next day two Orioles showed up. I almost never see them. There they were, splashing around like they owned the place.

Small things.

Ordinary backyard things.

But I didn’t rush past them.

My sneakers. I recently replaced my sneakers, and the difference in my step on my regular daily walk was genuinely delightful. My observation is that we hang onto our sneakers longer than we should. We hang onto a lot of things longer than we should.

And then there’s bubble tea. With the warmer weather I’ve been walking to do my local errands (instead of driving,) and there’s a bubble tea place on the route. I always order the same “Spark Tea.” It’s Passion Fruit, with the Tapioca balls. And it never fails…the minute it’s my turn to make my order, I always blank on that word “Tapioca.” I just stand there with a odd look on my face as I’m trying hard to remember it, lol. By the way, I made myself a mnemonic and it’s helping: tap dancing. It starts with the letter T. And it’s working! Those wonderfully weird ,chewy little balls that I find myself completely focused on every single time are so enjoyable. And me? I’m just fully there. A warm summer day, a good walk and tap-dancing Tapioca.

That’s Radical Amazement. It doesn’t have to be profound. It just has to be real.

The story that had the biggest impact and taught me the most

The example I can share that taught me this most deeply is related to my dog. Many of you knew him from the podcast. He was a 135 pound Newfoundland who was an extraordinary member of our family. He passed away in late April 2026, and we miss him terribly.

For years I had a habit of rushing through his morning feeding. I had things to do that were more important, right? I wanted a strong start to the day and had to get to my desk fast! That’s the way I was thinking.

And then he got sick. Cancer.

And one morning, when I caught myself rushing again, something stopped me.

I slowed down.

I watched him.

I thought about how happy he was in that moment, just because I was there, just because food was coming.

I let myself really be there with him.

And that’s the time that feeding Niko breakfast became one of the best parts of my day. A slow, genuinely lovely start to the morning that I had been rushing through for years, without ever really seeing it.

I’m so glad I made that change. Especially now that he’s gone.

That’s what “Amplify” actually means in a real life.

You don’t wait for your life to feel meaningful. You participate in making it meaningful, right now, with what’s already in front of you.

The identity shift to become the leader of your life

Here’s what being the Queen of Your Brain Domain means for me (and hopefully you too) in today.

You are not just the observer of your thoughts. You are the leader of your life.

The woman who lives this way doesn’t wait for her life to feel meaningful.

She notices what’s real, interrupts what’s automatic, and amplifies what matters on purpose, while she’s still in it.

She doesn’t do this perfectly. Nobody does. But she does it more and more, and that’s enough.

If any of this is resonating, I’d love to talk. A Next Chapter Direction Session is a focused private conversation where we look at what’s actually going on in your life, what you may not be seeing, and what needs to change. You can book yours at www.talktosuzy.com.

And if you want to hear the full episode, including the sentimental part where I cried while recording it, it’s Episode 461 of Women in the Middle, wherever you listen to podcasts.

Being the Queen of your Brain Domain is still the best way to be.
